Hello world. How are you today? I’m not quite sure how to start this off as you can tell. I’m Sam, I’m 26 years old. I’m from New York City, but I currently live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I guess that’s as good a place to start as any. But let’s get to why this site even exists in the first place.
I’ve always loved two things in my life: words and sports.
Regrettably I don’t read as much as I used to, but one of the most relaxing things in the world to me is still sitting down and getting lost in a book. Maybe with a cup of tea as well. And a cozy blanket.
Reading ultimately led to my love of writing, as did my love of talking and sharing my thoughts to the people around me. It started with creative writing and a vision of becoming a novelist, but then I took a journalism class and my world turned upside down. Later on came a taste of broadcasting which gave me full clarity on what I wanted to do with my life.
Then there’s sports. Those who know me know I have an infatuation with, and passion for, hockey. My parents (and dad’s parents) met in the New York Rangers Fan Club, and instilled in me a love for all things Blueshirts from a very young age. Then came my teenage years and Tumblr and falling in love with specific players and their teams. Now I’m just a full-blown fanatic.
But in general, sports are a fixture in my life and a major part of my relationship with my family. For varying amounts of time in my life I have played soccer, softball, volleyball, and I figure skated. At any given time in my house you’ll probably find hockey, football, baseball, basketball, or really any sport on my television. The walls and bookshelves in both my mom and dad’s houses are adorned with memorabilia from all of our favorite teams (Rangers, Yankees, Giants, Mets, Leafs, Canes, etc). When I speak to my parents on the phone the conversations often lead to the games our teams recently played or the moves our GMs are making. I even wrote my Common App essay for college about mine and my family’s love for sports.
See, I can tell I’m already rambling.
I say all this to give you an idea of what my life, career, and this site is about. I’m a female pursuing a career in sports media. It has its ups and downs as I’m sure you can imagine (I may write a separate piece about that in the future), but I have been truly blessed in some of the opportunities I’ve had in my young life so far.
From working at the top collegiate TV station in the country (shoutout Q30 Television) covering Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey among other sports, to interning with the National Women’s Hockey League, to blogging about the Rangers, to Bleacher Report where I worked my way up to the opportunity of a lifetime in creating a hockey social media brand from scratch. All of these experiences have meant the world to me and helped me grow in so many ways. And I know only more great things are on the horizon.
So welcome to my site, if you made it this far. My goal is to have one central place to house links to my work and to post some original content. I’m tired of saying “I’ll get to this eventually” and envisioning projects that never come to life. I’ve wanted to do this for a while now, so here I am executing it. It’s not perfect, but I’ll have to live with that. (As a perfectionist that is incredibly hard to do)
I hope you will all check out my work and stay tuned for more stuff to come in the future.
Now I don’t know how to end this. Awkward. Uh, I hope you have a wonderful day/afternoon/night. Stay classy, San Diego. Or something.
